STARTING A YOGA PRACTICE

Updated: Jul 10, 2021

I absolutely love yoga and have been very surprised at how it has positively impacted my life. I began my fitness journey in 1988 and never ever thought I would do something like yoga. I have always enjoyed interval training, step aerobics, circuit training and other similar exercises. I had no plan of doing yoga until I was asked to sub a pilates class for a friend years ago. I went to her class in preparation to sub and I found that she was actually doing a combination yoga-pilates. It came as a total surprise, but I was hooked on yoga! I immediately registered and took a basic yoga teacher training course so I could start teaching it too.

What I enjoy about yoga is that it’s multi-level and multi-format. It’s completely universal, because it can adapt to anyone’s fitness needs or skill level. Personally, I can move better because yoga is functional for daily life, and I love the reduction in stress I found with it. I even noticed that the breath practice has been something I use every day off of my mat to enhance the quality of my life. Yoga just makes me feel better!

I have been absolutely shocked by the little things that I enjoy each day and the things that unfold each day on this journey, which is why I want to share it with others. I believe that it is important to start slowly in yoga and learn the foundations of the practice. We give our students at blue mountain Yoga the experience of getting comfortable on the mat and learning what works for them on their mat. We very much practice the philosophy of it is “your practice on your mat.” Do what feels good for you!
